Learn About Eye Disease
Some eye diseases are more common than others. You could be at a higher risk of eye disease if you:
- Have a family history of eye disease
- Have medical conditions, like diabetes
- Are obese
- Are a smoker
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) define the leading causes of blindness and low vision in the US to be age-related eye diseases like:
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
The leading cause of severe vision loss over age 50 is macular degeneration, a disease that impairs your central vision. AMD comes from changes to your macula, a small part of your retina in the back of your eye.
Cataracts
Most people will develop cataracts later in their lifetime. A cataract occurs when the crystalline lens of your eye becomes brittle and cloudy. Stronger prescriptions can accommodate for the change in vision, but eventually, cataract surgery may be required.
Diabetic Retinopathy
Small blood vessels in your retina can be damaged by high blood sugar levels, causing diabetic retinopathy. Some treatments are available to stop the progression of the disease, but vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy is irreversible.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders typically caused by increased pressure inside of the eye. It begins by damaging the outermost vision first and can go undetected without regular eye exams.
Supporting Your Eye Health
Eye Q is here to support you and your eye health, wherever it’s at. Eye diseases and vision loss affect many Americans, especially those who are older.
Many eye diseases don’t show any symptoms early on in their progression. At Eye Q, we can help diagnose many eye diseases early on at your comprehensive eye exam. Make sure your eye health is at its optimum, and come in to have your eyes checked regularly.
